Becky Duncan - Practice Principal/Neurological Specialist
Following qualification as a Physiotherapist from Leeds Metropolitan University, Becky initially worked at St James's University Teaching Hospital becoming a senior Neuro-Physiotherapist, developing services for neurological patients. She has worked in Cornwall for over 10 years both in the NHS, as the Clinical Specialist for Stroke and Neurology and privately, as the Principal Physiotherapist at Helston and Neurological Physiotherapy Practice. Becky, along with her husband Rodger, set up Helston and Neurological Physiotherapy Practice in 2010 to provide specialist physiotherapy locally. This includes working closely with charities such as Parkinsons UK and the MS Society to help support patients living in Cornwall. She has also developed the Cornwall and Plymouth Functional Electrical Stimulation Outreach Clinic from The National FES Centre based in Salisbury Hospital, in partnership with the NHS. Becky is a Saebo trained practitioner which assists Stroke patients to recover their arm movement and function. Her extensive experience enables Becky to provide highly skilled assessment and treatments to both neuro and musculoskeletal conditions.Becky continues to strive to bring effective treatment and symptom management techniques to the practice through working in partnership with national providers of rehabilitation, injury management and research. This ensure that the practice offers forward thinking and effective treatment approaches.
Clare Girling - Associate Musculoskeletal Specialist
Clare qualified at King's College Hospital, London and first worked as a physiotherapist in the home-counties, where she consolidated her treatment skills. To specialise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy Clare joined RNAS Culdrose in 1996 and then worked in her own very successful private physiotherapy practice in Mullion, whilst working part time at Helston Community Hospital. She also became a qualified acupuncture practitioner, using her skills to treat both acute and chronic pain and movement dysfunction.During her time as part of the outpatient department in Helston, Clare helped the team reduce the waiting times from 25 weeks to 2 weeks by introducing the Physio Direct and Continence Direct advice lines, Drop-in clinics and Pilates classes. The team’s success was rewarded in 2008 when they won the Health and Social Award for ‘Adopt, Adapt and Improve’ for the South West region.Clare joined Helston Physiotherapy Practice in December 2011, where she is able to practise her specialist skills in manual therapy, soft tissue mobilisation and Pilates. She also uses Acupuncture to treat pain and neurological symptoms.
Mel Benyon - Associate Neurological Specialist
Mel qualified as a physiotherapist at the University of East London in 1994. Mel has worked with patients with a variety of neurological conditions before specialising in spinal cord injuries. She worked for 16 years at The Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury, the regional specialist unit for patients with spinal cord injuries, where for the last 4 years she shared the post of clinical lead and Superintendent Physiotherapist. Mel has experience of treating patients with all levels and severity of spinal cord injury, including those with respiratory needs, and has used FES with patients for upper and lower limb dysfunction due to a variety of neurological conditions. Since 2010 Mel has used acupuncture and electro-acupuncture for the treatment of pain and conditions associated with neurological and musculoskeletal damage.Mel joined the team in January 2014 and is a valuable member of the Neuro rehab team, assessing and treating neurological conditions as well as developing the Spinal Cord Injury and Vestibular rehab services.
Katie Evans - Sports and Massage Therapist
In 2016 Katie qualified as a Level 5 Advanced Clinical and Remedial Sports Massage Therapist and is now able to provide deep tissue massage, myofascial and soft tissue release, Rock taping and neuromuscular techniques.Katie has a first class honours degree in Health and Sports Studies and has trained with the International Institute of Sports Therapy. She has many years' experience of massage therapy and uses various techniques including soft tissue release to relieve pain and improve performance.Katie has a first class honours degree in Health and Sports Studies and has trained with the International Institute of Sports Therapy. Sarah Dugan - Practice Manager
Following four years working as a gym manager in Penryn Sarah joined Helston and Neurological Physiotherapy Practice as the practice administrator. She has been an integral part of the Practice since its conception in 2009. Now as Practice Manager she effectively co-ordinates patients appointments and the smooth running of the Practice. She works closely with both charitable and NHS providers to secure funding for patient treatment and provides patient support for case managers and other intermediaries.
Vicky Chamberlain - Practice Administrator
Vicky joined Helston and Neurological Physiotherapy Practice in September 2011. Prior to this she worked for a local charity who provide support to the elderly in their communities. She has over 20 years administration experience, 14 of which were spent serving in the Royal Navy both in the UK and overseas. Here at the practice Vicky manages the FES Outreach Clinic and assists Sarah with the day today running of the practice.
Liz Meakin - Associate Neurological Specialist
Liz qualified as a physiotherapist from the University of the West of England (Bristol) in 2004 and prior to that qualified as a Sports Therapist from the University of North London. Liz worked as a physiotherapist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust for 9 years, where she gained rehabilitation experience in many clinical specialities and settings, in particular neurology, complex rehabilitation and amputees. Liz also lectured at King's College London and specialised as the Neurology Team Lead at St Thomas' Hospital. Since then, Liz moved to Cornwall and has worked for 3 years as the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist at Marie Therese House Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust.Liz is highly experienced in promoting active lifestyles and treating patients with new onset and long term conditions. Liz joined Helston and Neurological Physiotherapy Practice in 2016 where she combines her extensive physiotherapy knowledge and skills with her background in sports therapy to provide positive and effective rehabilitation.
Daniel Lawrence - Associate Musculoskeletal Specialist
Daniel qualified in 2006 from Leeds Metropolitan University having previously worked in the fitness industry. He went on to gain a post graduate diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine from Middlesex University to specialise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Daniel has recently been the lead Physiotherapist at Truro College as well as lecturing at the college and around the UK as the Education Director for Rocktape.Over the last 10 years Daniel has worked with a variety of patient and sports groups in Cornwall and continues to teach other therapist throughout the UK. Daniel has a specialist interests in tendon pain, running and strength and conditioning. He uses his advanced skills in gait and running analysis to improve performance and prevent injury along with soft tissue and joint mobilisation techniques to reduce pain and promote recovery.
